To Become a CNA

You might be wondering if there are actual online CNA courses.  The short answer is that yes, there are but there is more to it than that.  You can find some training programs that offer a portion of the nursing assistant training online.

It is not possible for all portions of nursing assistant training to be conducted online.  For example, you cannot fulfill clinical training requirements online.  This must be done offline at a healthcare facility or other hands on training facility in your local area.

Some online nursing assistant courses are actually for individuals who do not tend to receive certification. These individuals will often work as non-certified nursing aides.  If you do not complete a course that is approved by the state, you will not be able to obtain certification.

There are some online cna courses that do allow you to become certified as long as you complete your clinical training offline. Sometimes you will also need to do some lab work and other hands on instruction offline to fulfill all requirements for nursing assistant training in your state.

An online cna course can provide you with some advantages over ones that are offline.  These courses are often less expensive than traditional training.  They provide you with the flexibility you need to complete your studies in between work and other family responsibilities.

Look for feedback, rating and reviews on any online cna training programs that you are considering.  Talk to anyone you know who completed training online to find the most reputable online cna training classes.

Continuing Education Courses

Online cna courses are sometimes available for continuing education credits that you need each year to retain an active nursing assistant certification.  Many of the classes that you are required to take to keep you up to date on the information you need to be a good nursing assistant will be available online.

Online continuing education credits are beneficial because they allow you to finish your credits on your own timeline.  You can work on your course between work shifts and in between other responsibilities for your home and family.  In some cases these online continuing education credits might be free.  Your employer will often pay all or part of any fees you need to pay for additional nursing assistant training each year.

Keep in mind that you will need to finish some continuing education credits each year in order to keep your certification active.  If you do not keep up with these credits, you might need to go through all or part of the certification process again.  Use online courses whenever possible to help make certain you retain an active certification.

Paid CNA Training

You will need to attend and pass a nursing assistant certification program before being granted certification. A nursing assistant is commonly called a CNA.  A CNA is someone who provides some basic care services for patients in a range of healthcare settings (including home health). It will also be necessary to pass the nursing assistant competency exam administered by your state.  There are ways to receive paid CNA training.

If you are receiving training to become a nursing assistant through a nursing care facility, you might be eligible to have your employer pay for your training.  These facilities often hire individuals to work as nursing assistants even if they need to complete the training process.

Nursing care facilities often offer training directly on-site.  Therefore, they will hire motivated individuals who are interested in an entry-level healthcare position to work as nursing assistants.  If you are hired to work as a nursing assistant before you have training, you will then need to complete the training program and pass the exam.

In order to receive paid cna training from your employer, you will have to agree to work as a certified nursing assistant for that facility for a certain amount of time.  (The employer will provide you with details on all these requirements.  It is sometimes possible to work for this employer as a nursing assistant while you are finishing all requirements for certification.

Many states offer a grace period in which people can work in a healthcare facility while completing their training.  If you qualify for this grace period, you will have time to finish your training classes and to take (and pass) the certification exam.

During that time, you will be able to be paid to work for the healthcare facility.  This is good news if you need to be able to receive an income while completing the steps for certification (especially if you are currently not employed).

You need to work as a paid CNA for a certain amount of time each year in order to be able to complete the necessary nursing assistant recertification every two years.  Typically, you will need to have worked as a nursing assistant for pay for at least 150 hours over a 24-month period.  If you do not work this many hours as a paid cna, you might need to repeat a training course or to sit for the for the certification exam again.

If you are not working as a paid cna, your nursing assistant certification can lapse.  This is to make sure that you have the experience and knowledge that you need at all times to provide good care for patients.  Many states require you to work for at least 8 hours in a given amount of time if you want to be able to easily reactivate your nursing assistant certification.  The criteria can vary from state to state.  Even if you decide not to work as a nursing assistant full-time, you should try to work a couple hours each week or a few hours each month to retain your certification.

The American Red Cross has a long tradition of helping people.  They help individuals and communities prepare for emergency situations and are there to reach out when people fall victim to a crisis.  The Red Cross does much more than this.  For example, some chapters offer Red Cross CNA classes.

You have decided that you want to train to work as a certified nursing assistant (cna).  You will need to find a state approved cna training course.  These courses are not very expensive; however, you might still be hoping to find free cna classes.  There are a potential ways to receive cna training for free.

Become a Certified CNA

A certified CNA is a nursing assistant who has obtained certification.  In order to become a certified cna, an individual needs to complete training requirements according to both state and federal standards.  Certification requires training classes designed for individuals who want a career as a CNA as well as a CNA competency exam.

Education Process

It only takes a few weeks and several hundred dollars to train for work as a nursing assistant. The length of training time will vary from one state to another.  Courses must include at least 75 hours of study though many training programs offer much more training time than that.

Anyone who is interested in working as a certified CNA must take a training program that is approved by the state and meets all federal and state requirements.  A nursing assistant training program provides individuals with the skills and knowledge they need to take (and pass) the certification exam and to work as a certified nursing assistant.

Job Duties

An individual who works as a certified CNA will provide a variety of basic care services to patients in healthcare settings.  Nursing assistants are seen most frequently in long-term care facilities and other nursing care facilities.

Nursing assistants help patients with a wide range of activities of daily living including:  bathing, dressing, grooming and eating.  Nursing assistants often help patients to remain mobile and help to rotate patients in their beds if they are not mobile.

A nursing assistant must provide kind and compassionate care for their patient’s at all times.  CNAs help to keep patients comfort when they are in a healthcare setting.  They answer call balls and provide a range of basic care services for patients.

Maintaining Certification

It is usually necessary to apply for recertification every two years when working as a nursing assistant.  Nursing assistants must fill out recertification paperwork (some of which is completed by the employer) and submit it to the State Board of Nursing or the Nursing Aide Registry (as required by the state).  Every year nursing assistants will need to complete some continuing education credits.  CNAs must work 150 hours each two years to be eligible for recertification.  If a certified CNA allows their certification to lapse, they might be required to retake the certification exam or to complete a training course again (it depends on the state).


Working as a certified cna can be a rewarding career especially for individuals who like to help others.  Some nursing assistants will go on to become nurses or other healthcare professionals.

CNA Skills

CNA skills are the skills that a certified nursing assistant must be able to perform in order to provide effective care for patients.  Nursing assistants will learn the most common CNA skills during their certification training program.  Graduates of a training program must demonstrate several different skills successfully during the nursing assistant certification exam.

There are many skills that a CNA must be able to utilize each day when caring for patients.  The skills go beyond the direct care that nursing assistants provide for their patients.

CNA skills include safety measures that a nursing assistant takes to protect their patients, themselves, other patients and other healthcare workers.  CNAs must know how to properly wash their hands and to use universal safety precautions.  They must know how to help prevent the spread of disease and germs.

Nursing assistants must have the skills necessary to prevent patients from falling out of bed or falling when being assisted to move out of bed (or moved out of bed).  Nursing assistants must be able to bathe, change and perform other care services to patients without injury to the patient or to the CNA.

Nursing assistants must be able to answer call bells efficiently and to communicate well with patients.  They must develop a good bedside manner and the ability to cooperate with other healthcare workers.  Nursing assistants must be able to safely and properly use any restraints, monitors or other devices.

A nursing assistant must know all steps to follow in the event of a fire or other disaster.  He or she must be able to respond quickly and effectively to any type of emergency situation whether it is with one patient or the entire floor (or building).

Nursing assistants must have the necessary skills to monitor patient vital signs and other details.  He or she must be able to properly add information to a patient’s chart and to protect the integrity of that chart.

A nursing assistant must be able to help to prevent bedsores in patients who cannot move on their own.  He or she might need to be able to apply dressings and to assist with wound care.  In some settings, nursing aides also help with catheter care.  CNAs must always be able to help bathe, groom and move patients in a safe manner.

CNAs will be expected to help keep a patient’s room clean and organized.  He or she should know how to change a patient’s linen and to properly make their bed.  Home health nursing assistants will often need to have some basic cleaning skills as they sometimes need to perform basic household duties as well.
These are just a few of the cna skills that must be mastered.  A few dozen different skills will be taught to individuals who are training to become nursing assistants.  A handful of the skills taught will need to be demonstrated during the nursing assistant certification exam to ensure that individuals are ready to work directly with patients.
