New Mexico uses the same process as anyone else to certify nursing assistants. Individuals with no prior experience must attend a nursing assistant training program. The training program will be approved by the requirements for nursing assistant training programs within the state of New Mexico. It is important to have a clean criminal record if you want to train and work as a nursing assistant in New Mexico. New Mexico also offers certification to some individuals through the process of reciprocity. If your application is approved, you will not need to sit for the certification exam nor will you need to complete a CNA training program.
You can apply to have your nursing assistant certification from another state accepted in New Mexico. It will be necessary for the Nurse Aide Registry in New Mexico to make certain you have a valid and active nursing assistant certification from the state where you live. The nursing aide registry will also make certain that you have never committed any crimes against patients in your prior employment as a nursing assistant. It is generally not difficult to receive certification through reciprocity in New Mexico as long as you have a certification in good standing without any problems.

SJC provides the CNA Course with limited space per course so you will have to be fast to apply for their classes if you want to study there. A typical program is a six credit hour course which runs for about eight weeks with 4 hour classes which are kept 3 days a week except for when the tutor decides to have more classes.
The program is state approves and after you finish your classes you can take the certification exam. Total cost of the program comes up to about $600 which does not include fees for the state approved exam which is about $100 (you don’t have to pay this upfront with the fees, you will be told when to pay this – usually it is after you’ve finished your course).
They will run a background criminal check on you to make sure you don’t have any previous incidents that can create a problem in your license application.
If you need financial help or a student loan to pay for the course SJC do have a financial aid program through which they support these kind of inquiries, for more details on this you will have to talk to or get in touch with their office on this address 4601 College Blvd. | Farmington, NM 87402 |Office: (505) 566-3323 | Fax: (505) 566-3568/3593
Once you successfully complete your course and pass the competency test you will then be added to the state registry and be able to work as a licensed certified nurse aide.
